Tile Removal in St. Petersburg, FL

Tile Removal · St. Petersburg, FL

The tile comes up, and the mortar comes with it

Tile removal is the first step when an old tile floor, shower or backsplash has to go. Flow Home Services is a veteran-owned handyman and remodeling company based in St. Petersburg. We pull up floor tile, remove wall and shower tile, and get the old mortar off the slab. Then we haul the broken tile and mortar away, so the room is ready for what comes next.

Our tile removal service covers one bathroom floor or every tiled room in a house or condo. Once the tile is out, a new floor usually goes down, and that is flooring installation. New tile on the floor or the walls is tile installation. Estimates are free, so text photos of the tile to (727) 404-7164.

Floor tile removal down to the concrete slab

In St. Petersburg's block ranch homes, floor tile sits right on the concrete slab. Removal starts with the room cleared and the baseboards off. Then the tile is broken loose and lifted, one section at a time. The tile itself is the quick part.

The first thing a tile removal company needs to know is what the tile is set in. Newer tile is usually set in thinset, a thin layer of mortar. Older floors may sit on a thick mortar bed, which takes longer to break out. Either way, the mortar comes off the slab before anything new goes down.

Once the mortar is off, we check how flat the slab is. Leftover ridges get ground down, and low spots get filled. The goal is a clean, flat slab for the next floor, whether that is plank or new tile.

Wall and shower tile removal in bathrooms and kitchens

Bathroom and shower wall tile comes off down to the backer board or the block wall behind it. What sits behind the tile decides how far the removal goes. If water got behind the old tile, the damaged backer comes out with it.

Backsplash tile comes off the kitchen wall with the countertop and cabinets covered below. The drywall behind a backsplash can tear as the tile lets go, and those spots get patched. Then the wall is ready for new tile or paint.

Tile removal is often the first step of a bathroom remodel. Once the old tile is out and the walls are open, the new waterproofing and tile can go in.

Tile removal in older St. Petersburg homes

About 7 in 10 homes in St. Petersburg were built before 1980, and the median year built is 1969. More homes went up in the 1950s than in any other decade. Disston Heights, one of the largest mid-century neighborhoods in Pinellas County, comes from that era. The age of a house tells us what to look for before the tile comes up.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission says some vinyl floor tiles, sheet vinyl backing and flooring adhesives can contain asbestos. Ceramic and porcelain tile is not on that list. Sanding those vinyl tiles can release fibers, so old vinyl flooring and old flooring adhesive get tested first.

The city's List of Exempted Permits names tiling and carpeting among finish work exempt from a building permit. Storm repairs, like the ones after Hurricanes Helene and Milton, follow a different rule. Removing storm-damaged flooring needs no permit, but a building permit is required before it is replaced. Confirm with the city for your job, and we talk it through at the estimate.

A kitchen backsplash partly removed, with the torn wall surface showing where the old tile came off and the debris gathered on a towel on the counter Older floor tiles cracked and lifted off the floor, a common reason a tile floor comes up before a new one goes down

FAQ

Tile Removal Questions, Answered

Common questions about tile removal across St. Petersburg and Pinellas County. If yours is not here, call or text and ask.

What drives the cost to remove tile?
Tile removal cost comes down to square footage, and to whether the tile is on a floor or a wall. A thick mortar bed takes longer to clear than thinset, and grinding or patching the slab adds work. Baseboards, trim and hauling the debris away are part of the price too. Our tile installation cost guide lists market ranges for removal, and the estimate for your job is free.
Is tile removal dusty? Can you do dustless tile removal?
Breaking up tile and mortar makes dust, so every tile removal job starts with a plan for it. We close off the room we are working in and cover the floors and doorways around it. At the end of each day, we clean up.
Can the slab be saved, and what happens to the mortar?
Yes. The slab stays, and only the tile and the mortar on top of it come off. Removal can chip the surface, and those spots get patched before the next floor. If the old tile is flat and solid, a new floor can sometimes go right over it instead.
Do you remove shower and bathroom wall tile?
Yes. We take out shower walls, tub surrounds and tiled bathroom walls, one wall or the whole room. The tile comes down to the backer board or the block, and damaged backer comes out with it. Tell us what is going back up, because that sets how much of the wall comes out.
What about asbestos in old floor tile?
You cannot tell by looking at it; a professional takes a sample and a laboratory reads it. In Florida, asbestos testing and removal are a separately regulated trade, and that work is not ours. We do not break up, grind or sand flooring that tests positive. Where possible, the Consumer Product Safety Commission advises covering that floor with a new one.
Do you remove tile in condos?
Yes, in condos around St. Petersburg and out in the beach towns. Tile removal is loud work, so building rules matter. The association may set work hours, elevator use and rules for how debris leaves the building. Start there, and send us those rules along with your photos.

Christian and his team did an incredible job at building our backyard shed. This was an involved job that other handymen would not touch. The project consisted of framing, siding, roofing, painting, securing into concrete, etc. his skill and attention to detail was impressive. Christian was very reliable and showed up on time everyday ready to work. In addition, Christian updated us numerous times throughout the day with progress pictures and videos as we were traveling during the holidays. The team cleaned up and we can home to a fully built 10x14 ‘ shed/garage. If you are looking for a reliable, skilled handyman/builder, look no further. We will be using Flow Home Services again soon.
