Cabinets set level, so the countertop sits right

Cabinet installation means setting cabinet boxes level and tight to the wall, then finishing the gaps around them. Flow Home Services is a veteran-owned company based in St. Petersburg. We install full kitchen cabinet sets and cabinets you bought yourself, in houses and condos across Pinellas County. We also replace a few damaged cabinets, or add a wall cabinet or a tall pantry cabinet.

The same work covers bathroom vanity cabinets and laundry room cabinets. When the countertops and floors are changing as well, the job is a kitchen remodel. If you like your cabinets and only want a new color, that is cabinet painting. Send photos of the room by text to (727) 404-7164 for a free estimate.

How kitchen cabinet installation is done

The old cabinets come out first, and we measure the room with the walls bare. The first thing a cabinet installer looks for is the high point of the floor. The level line for the base cabinets is measured up from that spot. Shims can raise a cabinet but cannot lower one, so every other cabinet comes up to meet the line.

Cabinets are screwed to each other so the run acts as one piece. Each one is secured to the wall framing, with a shim behind it wherever the wall dips. A countertop only sits flat on base cabinets that are level. Wall cabinets get their own level line higher up the wall.

Filler strips close the gap where a cabinet meets a wall, and scribe molding follows a wall that bows. Toe kicks cover the base, and end panels finish any exposed side. Crown molding can run along the top of the wall cabinets. Last, the pulls and knobs go on, and each door and drawer is adjusted until the gaps line up.

Cabinet installation in St. Petersburg homes and condos

Many homes in Meadowlawn and Disston Heights are concrete block ranches from the 1950s to the 1970s. When the kitchen sits on an outside block wall, we check how that wall is built before the first screw. Behind the finish there may be wood studs, furring strips over the block, or bare block. Furring strips give the drywall a nailing surface, and what we find decides how each cabinet is fastened.

The floors in those houses are seldom level, and some still have terrazzo under the old flooring. In the 1920s bungalows of the Old Northeast and Historic Kenwood, walls are often out of square. Shims under the base cabinets and scribe molding along the wall take up the difference. In condos downtown and on the beaches, check with your association about work hours and deliveries first.

The City of St. Petersburg's List of Exempted Permits names cabinetry and countertops as finish work exempt from a building permit, except where the work affects a load bearing wall or a fire rated separation. Kitchens gutted after the 2024 storms are different: tearing out damaged cabinets needs no permit, but replacing them does. Confirm with the city, and we walk through that when we look at the job.

Installing cabinets you bought, replacement cabinets and vanities

Some homeowners buy the cabinets before they call a cabinet installer. We assemble flat-pack and ready-to-assemble cabinets from a store or online, then install them. Before the job, have the cabinet order or list, the layout drawing and the delivery date ready. Leave the boxes sealed until we check them against the order, so a damaged or missing piece shows up early.

Sometimes only a few cabinets are damaged. We take out the damaged ones, set the new ones level with the rest and line up the doors. An added wall cabinet or a tall pantry cabinet gets the same level line and the same finish work. That kind of job can share a visit with other handyman jobs around the house.

A vanity cabinet goes in the same way as a kitchen base cabinet, leveled and fastened to the wall. Laundry room cabinets hang from their own level line, like kitchen wall cabinets. In both rooms, we check what is behind the wall before anything is hung.

FAQ

Cabinet Installation Questions, Answered

Common questions about cabinet installation across St. Petersburg and Pinellas County. If yours is not here, call or text and ask.

Call (727) 404-7164

What drives the cost to install kitchen cabinets?
Cabinet installation cost comes down to how many cabinets there are and whether they arrive assembled or flat-pack. Taking out old cabinets and working over an uneven floor add time. Finish pieces like crown molding add to the price, and so can a block wall behind the cabinets. Send photos for a free estimate, or call or text (727) 404-7164.
Can you install cabinets I already bought?
Yes, including flat-pack and ready-to-assemble cabinets that still need to be put together. Send the order and the layout drawing with a few photos, and we price the assembly and the installation. Tell us the delivery date so the work can be scheduled around it.
Do I need a permit to replace kitchen cabinets in St. Petersburg?
The City of St. Petersburg lists cabinetry and countertops among finish work exempt from a building permit. The exception is work that affects a load bearing wall or a fire rated separation. After storm damage, removal needs no permit, but the city requires a building permit before cabinets are replaced. Confirm with the city for your address, and we walk through that when we look at the job.
How long does cabinet installation take?
A few replacement cabinets are a short job next to a full kitchen. Flat-pack cabinets add assembly time, and a floor that is far out of level adds shimming. The countertop follows the cabinets on its own timeline. Once we see the room, we can tell you which steps come when.
Do you install cabinets in condos?
Yes. We install cabinets in condo units around St. Petersburg and in the beach towns. Your association may set rules on work hours and elevator use, so check with them first. Tell us what the building allows when you send photos, and we schedule the work to fit.
What about the countertop and backsplash?
Cabinets come first. A stone countertop gets measured after the base cabinets are set, because it has to fit them as they sit. The tile backsplash goes on once the countertop is in, so the tile can sit tight to it.

Christian and his team did an incredible job at building our backyard shed. This was an involved job that other handymen would not touch. The project consisted of framing, siding, roofing, painting, securing into concrete, etc. his skill and attention to detail was impressive. Christian was very reliable and showed up on time everyday ready to work. In addition, Christian updated us numerous times throughout the day with progress pictures and videos as we were traveling during the holidays. The team cleaned up and we can home to a fully built 10x14 ‘ shed/garage. If you are looking for a reliable, skilled handyman/builder, look no further. We will be using Flow Home Services again soon.
