Door Repair in St. Petersburg, FL

Door Repair · St. Petersburg, FL

Fixing the doors and frames your home already has

Door repair fixes the doors your home already has, inside and out. A bedroom door rubs at the top corner and will not latch. The back door sticks every summer, or the bottom of its frame has gone soft. We tighten or replace hinges, plane and seal edges, move strike plates and cut out rotted wood.

Flow Home Services is a veteran-owned handyman and remodeling company based in St. Petersburg. Door repairs often sit on a longer list, and our handyman services cover the rest of it. Estimates are free. Text photos of the door and its frame to (727) 404-7164, in English or Spanish.

Sticking and Sagging Door Repair

A sticking door often starts at the top hinge. The screws work loose, the door drops toward the latch side and the top corner rubs. We tighten the hinges or replace worn ones, with a longer screw that reaches the wall framing. If the edge still rubs, we plane the tight spot and seal the bare wood.

A door that will not latch or lock often has a strike plate that no longer lines up. We adjust or move the strike and swap worn knobs, levers and deadbolts. Bifold and closet doors go back on their track. If the knob punched through the wall behind the door, a drywall patch and a door stop fix that.

Door Frame and Jamb Repair for Rotted Wood

On an exterior door, rot usually starts at the bottom of the jamb. Rain runs down the door and sits where the jamb meets the sill. The end grain soaks it up, and over the years the wood goes soft. Paint can hide the damage until a screwdriver sinks in.

Door jamb repair cuts the rot out, back to solid wood. A new piece is fitted in its place, then caulked, primed and painted. Brick mould, the trim outside the frame, gets the same repair, and so does split casing inside. Matching older trim profiles is part of our trim carpentry.

When rot has climbed most of the jamb, door jamb replacement or a new door is the better fix. The header and wall framing around the opening are structural work, which is not ours. Termite treatment is not ours either, so wood that looks eaten gets inspected by a pest control company first.

Front and Exterior Door Repair in Older St. Petersburg Homes

The Census puts the median year built for St. Petersburg homes at 1969. More of the city's homes date from the 1950s than from any other decade. In houses that age, frames have often settled, and doors carry many coats of paint. After a repair, the door and trim can be repainted as part of our interior painting.

Block homes from those decades often have wood door frames set into the block, with brick mould outside. That wood takes the weather, so it is where most front door repair happens. A worn threshold, a torn sweep or flat weatherstripping lets rain and air in. We replace those so the door seals when it closes.

If water got into your home during Hurricanes Helene and Milton, doors may have swelled and frames gone soft. Once the wood dries, a swollen door can often be planed and rehung rather than replaced. The city requires a permit application for storm damage repairs, doors included, so that is part of the conversation at the estimate.

FAQ

Door Repair Questions, Answered

Common questions about door repair across St. Petersburg and Pinellas County. If yours is not here, call or text and ask.

Call (727) 404-7164

What does door repair cost?
It depends on what is wrong and how much wood needs replacing. Tightening hinges or moving a strike plate is small work. Rotted door frame repair takes new wood, primer and paint, and hardware or weatherstripping adds parts. Estimates are free, so text photos of the door to (727) 404-7164.
Should I repair my door or replace it?
Send photos of the door and its frame, and we can often tell from there. Loose hinges, a strike plate out of line, a swollen edge or rot in part of the jamb are repairs. When the slab or the frame is too far gone, the answer is door installation.
How long does a door repair take?
Hinge, latch and hardware fixes are small jobs, often done along with the rest of a handyman list. A rotted jamb takes longer, because the new wood has to be cut in, primed and painted. We go over timing when we look at the door.
What about garage doors, sliding glass doors and locks?
Garage doors, shower doors, pocket doors and sliding glass door rollers and tracks are outside our door repair work. So are impact and hurricane door products. Rekeying, lockouts and glass replacement are jobs for a locksmith or a glass shop. We do swap knobs, levers, deadbolts and hinges.
Do I need a permit to repair a door in St. Petersburg?
St. Petersburg's List of Exempted Permits names finish work like painting and tiling, but doors are not on it, so confirm with the city before door work. After storm damage, the city requires a permit application for door repairs and says unpermitted repairs result in a violation. Flood zone and historic district homes can have extra steps, and we walk through that when we look at the job.
Who does door repair near me in St. Petersburg?
Flow Home Services is based in St. Petersburg, and our door repair service covers the whole city. We also drive to Largo, Clearwater, Pinellas Park, Seminole, Gulfport and the beach towns. In a condo, entry doors on a shared walkway may fall under association rules, so check first. Text photos to (727) 404-7164 for a free estimate.

Christian and his team did an incredible job at building our backyard shed. This was an involved job that other handymen would not touch. The project consisted of framing, siding, roofing, painting, securing into concrete, etc. his skill and attention to detail was impressive. Christian was very reliable and showed up on time everyday ready to work. In addition, Christian updated us numerous times throughout the day with progress pictures and videos as we were traveling during the holidays. The team cleaned up and we can home to a fully built 10x14 ‘ shed/garage. If you are looking for a reliable, skilled handyman/builder, look no further.
