Residential dirt moving with a tractor and a dump trailer

Flow Home Services does residential dirt work in St. Petersburg, Florida. Our compact tractor carries a landscape rake, a box blade and a grapple. A four-yard dump trailer does the hauling. That covers yard grading, spreading fill dirt and topsoil, picking up brush and storm debris, and hauling dirt in or out. It is the same company that takes handyman jobs around the house, so one number covers the yard and the repair list.

Most dirt work calls start with a low spot that holds water or a pile of fill that needs spreading. Some start with a yard torn up after a project. Send photos of the yard by text and we can price most of it from there. Estimates are free. Call or text (727) 404-7164, in English or Spanish, and tell us what the yard needs.

What We Handle

  • Yard grading and leveling with a box blade and a landscape rake
  • Fill dirt and topsoil spread and graded where the yard sits low
  • Low spots and standing water regraded so rain runs away from the house
  • Brush piles, limbs, palm fronds and storm debris picked up with the grapple
  • Dirt, old sod and yard debris hauled off, four yards per trip
  • Small loads of fill dirt or topsoil brought in by dump trailer
  • A level spot shaped for a shed or a parking area
  • Gravel driveways and side yards smoothed with the box blade

What dirt work covers on a St. Petersburg lot

Grading is the heart of it. The box blade cuts high spots down and drags that dirt into the low ones. The landscape rake follows and leaves a smooth, even grade that is ready for sod, seed or mulch. We grade whole yards, side yards, the strip along a driveway and the spot where a shed or a parking area will go.

Fill dirt and topsoil come next. If the yard sits low, we bring material in by dump trailer. We spread it and grade it to a slope that carries rain away from the house. Topsoil goes on top where grass or beds will grow. A few yards for one low spot or a trailer load at a time for a bigger area both work.

The grapple handles the mess. Brush piles, cut limbs, palm fronds, old sod and the dirt pile left from another project all get picked up and loaded. The dump trailer takes four yards per trip, so a cleanup that would take a weekend of wheelbarrow runs is a few loads.

How a dirt work job goes

It starts with photos or a visit. Send pictures of the yard, the problem spot and the path from the street to it. We look at how much dirt has to move, whether material comes in or goes out, and how the tractor gets in. Then you get a written estimate for free.

On the day, the tractor comes in on a trailer and works from the street or the driveway. The box blade does the rough cut, the rake does the finish, and the grapple loads whatever leaves the property. Hauling runs in four-yard trips, so a bigger pile takes more trips, and the estimate says how many.

Access matters more than people expect. A compact tractor needs a clear path through a gate or along a side yard. Measure the opening and tell us, and move cars and hoses off the route before we arrive. Where the tractor cannot fit, we talk about what can be done by hand.

Yards after the 2024 storms and on older Pinellas County lots

Plenty of yards near the water in St. Petersburg, Gulfport and the beach towns were torn up in the 2024 storms. Debris piles sat for months, and lawns washed out or settled. Dirt work puts the grade back. The debris goes out, fill goes in and the yard drains the right way again.

Older block homes and bungalows across Pinellas County have had decades to settle. A yard that once sloped away from the house can now hold water against it. Regrading that strip, and spreading fill where the ground dropped, is a common dirt work job here. We drive to Largo, Clearwater, Pinellas Park, Seminole and the other towns around St. Petersburg for it.

The City of St. Petersburg has a permit application that covers grading and adding or removing fill. Work inside a flood hazard area needs a city permit first. When a job looks like it needs one, we talk about it before any dirt moves.

What does dirt work cost in St. Petersburg?
The price follows the yards of dirt that have to move and the trailer trips that takes. How hard the spot is to reach matters too. Bringing fill in costs more than grading what is already there, because the material and the trips add up. We look at the yard or your photos and put the price in writing for free.
What is residential dirt moving?
Residential dirt moving is dirt work on a home lot instead of a job site. That means grading a yard, spreading fill or topsoil, moving a dirt pile and hauling debris away. We do it with a compact tractor and a four-yard dump trailer, which fit a typical St. Petersburg lot.
Do you deliver fill dirt or topsoil?
Yes, in small loads. The dump trailer carries up to four yards per trip, and we spread and grade what we bring. A low spot, a new bed or a settled strip along the house usually takes one or two loads. Bigger areas take more trips, and the estimate lists them.
Can you fix a low spot where water stands after it rains?
Usually, yes. We regrade the spot so the ground slopes away from the house and toward where the water should go. Fill goes in where the yard has dropped. We shape the dirt. Underground drain pipe is a separate trade, so we talk through that when we look at the yard.
Do you dig foundations, pools, septic systems or trenches for pipes?
No. Our dirt work stays on the surface of the lot: grading, leveling, spreading fill and topsoil, cleanup and hauling. Digging for a foundation, a pool, a septic system or utility lines is different work and is not something we take on.
Will the tractor fit through my gate or side yard?
A compact tractor fits most St. Petersburg side yards and double gates, and it can work from the street or the driveway when the job is out front. Measure the narrowest point on the route and send it with your photos. If the tractor cannot get through, we tell you what can be done by hand instead.
Do you haul away brush and yard debris?
Yes. The grapple loads brush, limbs, palm fronds, old sod and dirt into the dump trailer, four yards at a time. Yard debris and dirt are what we haul. For household junk or appliances, a junk hauler is the right call. Ask about fence and trim carpentry if a fence line is part of the same cleanup.

Christian and his team did an incredible job at building our backyard shed. This was an involved job that other handymen would not touch. The project consisted of framing, siding, roofing, painting, securing into concrete, etc. his skill and attention to detail was impressive. Christian was very reliable and showed up on time everyday ready to work. In addition, Christian updated us numerous times throughout the day with progress pictures and videos as we were traveling during the holidays. The team cleaned up and we can home to a fully built 10x14 ‘ shed/garage. If you are looking for a reliable, skilled handyman/builder, look no further.
