Trim carpentry: baseboards, crown molding and casing

Finish carpentry is measuring, cutting and fitting. A baseboard run looks simple until you reach a corner that is out of square. In older homes, most of them are. We scribe and cut to the wall in front of us, so the joints close tight.

Crown molding is the piece people want most and put off longest. It sits against two planes at once, so every corner is a compound cut. We check the ceiling line before the first piece goes up. A ceiling that dips will push a long run out of line, and the fix happens at the saw.

Casing, window sills and aprons finish the openings in a room. Chair rail, wainscoting and board and batten give a flat wall some depth. Shiplap does the same with horizontal lines. We fill the nail holes, caulk the seams and leave the work ready for a coat of paint.

Built-in shelving, bookcases and closet storage

Built-ins use space that is already there. A blank wall between two windows, an alcove, the dead corner of a bedroom. We size the shelving to the opening, then trim it so it reads like part of the house. Floating shelves, heavy mirrors and mounted TVs get anchored into framing or into fresh backing.

Closets are where people feel the difference first. One rod and one shelf waste the top half of the space. We add a second rod, more shelves and dividers where they fit. Pantry shelving works the same way, sized to what you actually store.

Gates are carpentry too. We build the frame square, fit the boards and hang it to swing or slide on a track. One of our Google reviews is from a couple who traveled over the holidays. Their backyard shed got framed, sided, roofed and painted while they were gone, with photos sent through the day.

Carpentry in older St. Petersburg homes and remodels

The 1920s bungalows in Historic Kenwood, the Old Northeast and Crescent Lake still carry their original trim. Those profiles are often taller and heavier than what a store stocks now. When one piece is damaged, we match it to the trim already in the room.

Block ranch homes from the 1950s to the 1970s were usually finished plain inside. Narrow baseboards, flat casing and no crown. Adding trim is one of the simplest ways to make those rooms feel done. In a block home, the drywall often sits on furring strips fastened to the block. That limits where you can nail. We find the strips first, or set backing behind anything that has to carry weight.

Carpentry runs through a remodel from the first day to the last. We frame the niche, the curb and the bench before a tile shower goes in. Blocking goes into the wall where grab bars and a floating vanity will land. Walls that carry weight sit outside what we do. After new kitchen cabinets land, we run the toe kick, the filler strips and the molding on top. Trim follows a new door into the room the same way.

FAQ

Carpentry Questions, Answered

Common questions about carpentry across St. Petersburg and Pinellas County. If yours is not here, call or text and ask.

Call (727) 404-7164

Is a carpenter the same as a handyman?
There is plenty of overlap. A handyman visit covers a mixed list of small jobs around the house. Carpentry is the wood part of that list, and it takes its own tools and a slower pace. We do both, so the trim work and the rest of the list can happen together.
What do carpenters charge per hour?
An hourly number will not tell you much, because the work varies so widely. Price moves with the length of the run, the number of cuts, the material and how straight the walls are. Our baseboard and crown molding cost guide has national market ranges per foot. Estimates are free. Text photos and rough measurements to (727) 404-7164.
What are the types of carpentry work?
Carpenters usually split it into rough carpentry and finish carpentry. Rough work is the framing behind the walls. Finish work is what you see: baseboards, crown, casing, shelving and built-ins. We do finish and trim carpentry, plus the light framing inside a remodel, like a shower niche or a bench.
Can you match the trim in my older home?
Usually, yes. Some older profiles are still sold. A close one can also be built up from two or three pieces of stock trim. We compare against a cut piece of what is already on your wall. When a match will read as different, we say so before anything comes off.
Do you build shelves on site or install ones I bought?
Either way works. We build shelving and bookcases on site to fit the wall, and we also install units you picked out yourself. A store bought piece still has to be leveled, scribed to the wall and anchored into something solid.
Can you do carpentry work in a condo?
Yes. We work in condos around St. Petersburg and out on the beaches. Trim, shelving and closet work inside the unit is normal carpentry. Buildings set their own rules for access, elevators and trash, so check with your association first.

Christian and his team did an incredible job at building our backyard shed. This was an involved job that other handymen would not touch. The project consisted of framing, siding, roofing, painting, securing into concrete, etc. his skill and attention to detail was impressive. Christian was very reliable and showed up on time everyday ready to work. In addition, Christian updated us numerous times throughout the day with progress pictures and videos as we were traveling during the holidays. The team cleaned up and we can home to a fully built 10x14 ‘ shed/garage. If you are looking for a reliable, skilled handyman/builder, look no further. We will be using Flow Home Services again soon.
