Fix the damaged spot and keep your floor

Floor repair fixes the damaged part of a floor so the rest can stay. Flow Home Services is a veteran-owned handyman and remodeling company based in St. Petersburg. We repair vinyl plank, laminate and tile floors in houses and condos. That includes lifted or gapped planks, swollen laminate, cracked or loose tile, and the slab or subfloor under them.

Spare planks or tiles from the original job make the closest match, so check the garage or a closet. When a new floor is the better answer, that is flooring installation, and we say so at the estimate. Estimates are free, so text photos of the floor to (727) 404-7164.

Vinyl Plank and Laminate Floor Repair

Most vinyl plank and laminate floors click together and float over the slab. Near a wall, we unclick the rows back to the damaged plank and swap it. In the middle of a room, we cut the bad plank out and glue a trimmed one in. Glued-down vinyl plank gets warmed so the old plank lets go.

A floating floor needs room to move at the walls. When a cabinet or trim pins it down, the planks push up into a peak along a seam. Gaps open where the slab dips and the joints flex underfoot. We fix the cause first, then lay the planks back down.

Laminate has a wood fiber core, and water makes the edges swell. A swollen board stays swollen after it dries, so it gets replaced. In a condo, the new board goes back over the same sound underlayment.

Tile Floor Repair and Floor Leveling

A cracked tile can come out without taking up the floor around it. We cut out the grout and break the tile out in pieces. The old thinset comes off, and the new tile goes in level, then gets grouted. A newer batch of the same tile can be a shade off, so spares match best.

A tile that sounds hollow when you tap it is not fully stuck to the slab. A hollow tile with no crack can often stay, but one that rocks gets reset in fresh thinset. A crack running through a line of tiles usually means the slab cracked, and that gets patched first. When cracks run across the room, tile removal and tile installation make more sense than a patch.

Floor leveling comes into plank repairs too. Low spots get a patch or a leveling mix, which cures before the floor goes back. Loose threshold strips get reset or replaced at the doorways. Quarter round gets nailed to the baseboard, so the floor under it can still move.

Subfloor Repair in Older St. Petersburg Homes

About 7 in 10 homes in St. Petersburg were built before 1980. The median year built across the city is 1969. The Kenwood Historic District is mostly homes built between 1912 and 1945, and more than half are bungalows. Older bungalows can have a wood subfloor instead of a concrete slab.

A soft spot in a wood subfloor usually comes from an old leak near a tub or a door. We cut out the soft section and fit a new piece of subfloor the same thickness. A squeak often comes from a loose subfloor rubbing on its nails, and screws pull it tight.

A floor that sags across a whole room is a different problem. That points to the framing under the house, which is not floor repair. If we see it, we tell you before any floor work starts.

FAQ

Floor Repair Questions, Answered

Common questions about floor repair across St. Petersburg and Pinellas County. If yours is not here, call or text and ask.

Call (727) 404-7164

What drives the cost of floor repair?
It starts with how many planks or tiles are damaged and whether you have spares. Glued-down planks, slab patching or a soft subfloor add work, and so does trim. Estimates are free, so send photos. If a new floor makes more sense, our laminate and vinyl plank cost guide lists market ranges.
Should I repair the floor or put in a new one?
A few damaged planks or tiles are a repair. Damage across most of a room points to a new floor, and so does laminate soaked by flood water. After a flood, the bottom of the walls often needs drywall repair as well. At the estimate, we tell you which way we would go.
What if my flooring is discontinued?
We take a piece of the old floor to find the closest match. A new plank also has to click into the old ones, so not every look-alike works. Sometimes we move planks from a closet to the open spot and put the close match in the closet. When nothing fits, a new floor in that room is the cleaner answer.
How long does a floor repair take?
Swapping a few planks is a short job, while tile needs time for the thinset and grout to set. A leveling mix has to cure before the floor goes back, so that adds time. Floor repair can go on the same list as your other handyman jobs.
What about asbestos in old vinyl floors?
The Consumer Product Safety Commission says some vinyl floor tiles, sheet vinyl backing and adhesives can contain asbestos. You cannot tell by looking, so old vinyl and old adhesive get tested before anyone cuts or sands them. Florida law makes asbestos testing and removal a separately regulated trade, and it is never our work. We never break up or sand flooring that tests positive.
Do I need a permit for floor repair in St. Petersburg?
The city's List of Exempted Permits names tiling, carpeting and other similar finish work as exempt from a building permit. Storm damage follows a different rule. Taking out storm-damaged flooring needs no permit, but a building permit is required before it is repaired. Confirm with the city, and we walk through it at the estimate.

Christian and his team did an incredible job at building our backyard shed. This was an involved job that other handymen would not touch. The project consisted of framing, siding, roofing, painting, securing into concrete, etc. his skill and attention to detail was impressive. Christian was very reliable and showed up on time everyday ready to work. In addition, Christian updated us numerous times throughout the day with progress pictures and videos as we were traveling during the holidays. The team cleaned up and we can home to a fully built 10x14 ‘ shed/garage. If you are looking for a reliable, skilled handyman/builder, look no further. We will be using Flow Home Services again soon.
