How Much Does Laminate and Vinyl Plank Flooring Installation Cost in St. Petersburg, FL?
Laminate flooring installation costs about $4 to $14 per square foot, and luxury vinyl plank costs about $4 to $16. Both 2026 ranges come from a national flooring cost guide, and they cover the plank and the labor. The same guide puts 500 square feet at $2,000 to $7,000 for laminate and $2,000 to $8,000 for vinyl plank.
Labor is a big part of that number. The guide says labor typically makes up 40 to 60 percent of a flooring job’s total cost.
These are market numbers from published cost guides. They are not our price list. Our flooring installation page covers how we put a new floor down.
What does laminate flooring installation cost per square foot?
Laminate is priced by grade, and thicker planks cost more. A 2026 national laminate cost guide splits each grade into material and labor, per square foot.
| Laminate grade | Material | Labor | Installed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basic, 6 to 7 millimeters | $2 to $3 | $2 to $4 | $4 to $7 |
| Midrange, 8 to 10 millimeters | $3 to $5 | $2 to $5 | $5 to $10 |
| High-end, 12 millimeters or more | $5 to $11 | $3 to $6 | $8 to $17 |
| Waterproof or water-resistant, 8 to 12 millimeters | $3 to $7 | $2 to $5 | $5 to $12 |
Guides do not agree to the dollar, so the high-end grade runs past the general range. Laminate floats on a foam or cork underlayment, and some laminate comes with that pad attached.
What does vinyl plank flooring installation cost per square foot?
A 2026 national vinyl plank guide says the price depends mostly on the wear layer, core type and plank thickness. It splits each grade into material and labor, per square foot.
| Vinyl plank grade | Material | Labor | Installed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Entry-level | $2 to $4 | $2 to $5 | $4 to $9 |
| Mid-range | $4 to $7 | $2 to $5 | $6 to $12 |
| Premium, WPC or SPC core | $6 to $10 | $3 to $6 | $9 to $16 |
At the low end, laminate and vinyl plank cost about the same. In the general guide, vinyl plank tops out higher, at $16 a square foot against $14.
Laminate or vinyl plank: which one fits your room?
Standard laminate is water-resistant but not waterproof. The vinyl plank guide says laminate can swell if water gets into the seams. The laminate guide does not recommend it for full bathrooms or laundry rooms.
Most vinyl plank is waterproof, so it can go where laminate should not. Tile is the other choice for wet rooms, and our tile installation cost guide has those numbers.
What does one room of new flooring cost?
The laminate and vinyl plank guides both price a 200 square foot room, such as 10 by 20 feet. The vinyl plank row is what that guide says most homeowners pay.
| 200 square foot room | Installed range |
|---|---|
| Basic laminate | $800 to $1,400 |
| Midrange laminate | $1,000 to $2,000 |
| High-end laminate | $1,600 to $3,400 |
| Luxury vinyl plank | $1,200 to $3,200 |
Removing the old floor, leveling and new trim can add to these totals. Doing the whole house helps, though. The laminate guide says larger jobs often have a lower cost per square foot than smaller projects.
The vinyl plank guide says to buy about 10 percent extra plank to cover cuts and waste. A diagonal layout or a room with lots of angles needs about 15 percent extra.
If only a few planks are damaged, a floor repair can cost less than a whole new floor. Spare planks left from the original job help a repair blend in.
What else adds to the cost of a new floor?
The plank is only part of the bill. These add-on ranges come from the 2026 flooring guide and the laminate guide.
| Extra work | Market range |
|---|---|
| Carpet removal | $0.70 to $1.60 per square foot |
| Old laminate or vinyl plank removal | $2 to $3 per square foot |
| Old ceramic or porcelain tile removal | $2 to $7 per square foot |
| Leveling or patching the subfloor | $1 to $3 per square foot |
| Underlayment, installed | $0.50 to $3.50 per square foot |
| Threshold strips and quarter round | $1 to $3 per linear foot |
| Stairs | $30 to $80 per stair |
Old ceramic tile is the costliest floor on this list to take out. Our tile removal page covers that part of the job.
A plank floor needs a flat base. The laminate guide gives a limit. If the floor changes height by more than 3/16 inch over 10 feet, planks can bend and joints can separate. High spots get ground down, and low spots get filled with a patch or leveling mix.
Vinyl plank with a pad attached needs no second one, since too much padding can make the joints flex. Over a concrete slab, ask whether a quote includes the underlayment and any moisture barrier.
Threshold strips cover the edge where the new floor meets another floor. Quarter round covers the gap at the baseboard. Stairs are priced per step, separate from the floor work. Ask whether a quote includes moving the furniture.
What changes flooring costs in St. Petersburg homes?
Many St. Petersburg homes have some age on them. The Census puts the median year built at 1969, and about 7 in 10 homes here were built before 1980.
An older home may have old vinyl tile or sheet vinyl under the carpet. The Consumer Product Safety Commission says asbestos is found in some vinyl floor tiles, sheet vinyl backing and flooring adhesives. You cannot tell by looking, unless the material is labeled. Sanding those tiles can release fibers.
So old vinyl flooring and old glue get tested before they come up. In Florida, asbestos surveys and removal are a separately regulated trade under chapter 469 of the Florida Statutes. That work is not ours, and we do not break up or sand flooring that tests positive. Where possible, the CPSC advises putting the new floor over the old one.
Older bungalows can have a wood subfloor instead of a slab. Soft spots in it call for subfloor repair before the new floor goes down.
Some condo associations ask for a sound underlayment under hard floors. A thicker foam or cork pad can make the floor quieter. The laminate guide puts that pad at $0.30 to $0.50 per square foot. Get your association’s rules before you buy material.
Homes with storm damage from Hurricanes Helene and Milton are their own case. In a rebuild, the permit rules below come before the floor price.
Does new flooring need a permit in St. Petersburg?
The City of St. Petersburg keeps a List of Exempted Permits. It names tiling, carpeting and other similar finish work as exempt from a building permit.
Storm damage changes that. Removing storm-damaged flooring needs no permit, but a building permit is required before it is repaired or replaced.
Homes in a Special Flood Hazard Area also fall under the city’s floodplain rules. The same exempted-permit list says a project in a designated flood zone has to meet the city’s substantial improvement rules and submit a cost breakdown, even for work that would otherwise need no permit. The city sets substantial damage at 49 percent of the home’s pre-damage market value, and past that line the whole home has to be brought up to current zoning, building and floodplain rules.
These are the city’s published rules, not legal advice. Confirm with the city for your address before you plan the work. We walk through that when we look at the job.
How do you get a real number for your floor?
