Popcorn Ceiling Removal in St. Petersburg, FL

Popcorn Ceiling Removal · St. Petersburg, FL

Old texture off, a flat ceiling left behind

Popcorn ceiling removal takes a rough, shadowed ceiling back to a flat one. The texture holds dust, it yellows over the years, and one small water stain spreads across it. Scraping the texture down is the quick part. What the ceiling looks like afterward comes from the finish work.

Flow Home Services is a veteran-owned handyman and remodeling company based in St. Petersburg. We take on one room or every ceiling in the house, in homes and condos across Pinellas County. Ceiling work comes up all the time inside our handyman services and inside a remodel. Estimates are free, so text a photo of your ceiling to (727) 404-7164.

What We Handle

  • Popcorn texture wet scraped off the ceiling
  • Floors, walls and doorways masked off before any scraping starts
  • Skim coating over the scraped ceiling for a flat surface
  • Old tape lines, nail pops and patch marks fixed once the texture is off
  • Smooth, knockdown or orange peel finish to match your walls
  • New drywall hung over the old ceiling when scraping is not the right call
  • Sanding to a paint ready surface, with ceiling paint if you want it
  • Ceiling texture removal in one room, a hallway or the whole house

How our popcorn ceiling removal service works

Prep is most of a clean ceiling job. The ceiling is cleared and the room is masked before we start, floor to wall and into the doorways. Furniture goes out or gets wrapped, and we go over anything else that has to come down first. Scraping is a wet job, and the work is in keeping the mess inside that one room.

Two things decide how we remove a popcorn ceiling. The first is whether the texture was ever painted. Unpainted texture softens under a light mist of water and pulls down with a wide blade. Painted texture takes on far less water, so it fights the scraper and comes off in chips.

The second is what sits under the texture. Some ceilings scrape clean and need a light skim, and some need a full skim coat across the whole surface. When scraping is the wrong call, new drywall goes up over the old ceiling and gets taped and finished flat. Cracked seams and sagging board are ceiling repair, and that part happens before any finish coat.

Older St. Petersburg homes and the asbestos question

The middle of St. Petersburg is block ranch houses from the 1950s through the 1970s. Disston Heights, Meadowlawn, Lakewood Estates, Jungle Terrace and Azalea are built out of them. Sprayed texture is still overhead in a lot of those rooms, and in older condos around the city. It is one of the ceiling jobs we hear about most in Pinellas County.

Age matters for one reason. Texture from that era can contain asbestos. The Consumer Product Safety Commission lists textured paints and ceiling patching compounds among the products that carried it. Their use was banned in 1977, and the agency warns that scraping those surfaces may release asbestos.

A ceiling from that era gets a sample tested before anyone scrapes it. A professional takes the sample and a laboratory reads it. Testing is not work the company does, and neither is removal of that material. Florida regulates that as a separate trade, and we do not scrape, sand or cover a ceiling that tests positive.

Skim coating, smooth ceilings and knockdown texture

A scraped ceiling is flat but not finished. Old tape lines, nail pops and patch marks show up once the texture is gone. We fix what shows, then skim coat the ceiling in thin coats and sand it out.

Then you pick the finish. A smooth ceiling is the most common ask. It is also the least forgiving, because light crosses it all day and every ripple reads. A knockdown or orange peel finish hides more, and it can match the texture already on your walls.

Order matters on a ceiling job. Ceilings get done before new floors go down and before the walls are painted. Once the skim coat is sanded, fresh paint on the ceiling evens the color out and finishes the room.

FAQ

Popcorn Ceiling Removal Questions, Answered

Common questions about popcorn ceiling removal across St. Petersburg and Pinellas County. If yours is not here, call or text and ask.

Call (727) 404-7164

Is it a good idea to remove a popcorn ceiling?
Most people do it because the texture looks dated and holds dust. A flat ceiling reads brighter and is easier to clean and repaint later. It is worth doing when the board under the texture is sound. When the texture is painted or that board is rough, we talk about covering the ceiling instead.
What does popcorn ceiling removal cost?
Estimates are free, so the real number comes from looking at the ceiling. Price moves with the square footage, the ceiling height and whether the texture is painted. A full skim coat takes more time than a light one. Our popcorn ceiling removal cost guide lists the market ranges. Text a photo of the ceiling to (727) 404-7164 and we can get you a number.
How can I tell if my popcorn ceiling has asbestos in it?
You cannot tell by looking at it. The only way to know is a sample, taken by a professional and read by a laboratory. Ceilings sprayed before the mid 1980s are the ones to have tested, and so is any ceiling you cannot date. We do not scrape, sand or cover a ceiling that tests positive. That material belongs to a separate trade, and the rest of your list can still go ahead.
What is the best chemical to remove a popcorn ceiling?
Water and a scraper do the work on most ceilings. Unpainted texture softens under a light mist and pulls down with a wide blade. Painted texture resists the water, and that ceiling usually does better with new drywall over the top.
How long does a popcorn ceiling job take?
Scraping is the fast part. Each coat of compound has to dry before the next one goes on, and that sets the pace. A single room usually spans more than one visit. We go over the schedule when we look at the job.
Can you remove a popcorn ceiling in a condo?
Yes, and condos are a good share of the ceiling work around here. The building sets the rules for access, elevators and how debris leaves the unit, so start with your association. Condo ceilings also need tighter masking, because there is nowhere for the dust to go. We plan that before anything gets scraped.

Christian and his team did an incredible job at building our backyard shed. This was an involved job that other handymen would not touch. The project consisted of framing, siding, roofing, painting, securing into concrete, etc. his skill and attention to detail was impressive. Christian was very reliable and showed up on time everyday ready to work. In addition, Christian updated us numerous times throughout the day with progress pictures and videos as we were traveling during the holidays. The team cleaned up and we can home to a fully built 10x14 ‘ shed/garage. If you are looking for a reliable, skilled handyman/builder, look no further.
