How Much Does Drywall Repair Cost in St. Petersburg, FL?

Drywall repair costs about $200 to $550 for a typical job, with a national average of $350. That range comes from a national cost guide. The same guide puts a few small nail holes at around $75. Water damage on a sagging, cracked ceiling sits near the top, at about $1,000.

The prices here are market figures from published cost guides, not our price list. Our drywall repair page covers how the work is done. This post covers what moves the price, from the size of the patch to the age of the house.

What does drywall repair cost by type of damage?

Cost guides price each kind of damage on its own line. Most homes have more than one, so add up the rows that match your walls. Every row below comes from one national cost guide.

RepairWhat the number coversMarket range
A few small nail holesJoint compound over the holesAbout $75
Hole in a wallLabor and materials$60 to $200
Hole in a ceilingOne small section$75 to $115

Inside corner crackInterior corners$220 to $315
Loose tape at a seamJoint tape repair$80 to $190
Torn drywall paperTear repair$95 to $300
Water damage, one roomWalls or ceilings$400 to $800
Flood cutWet board cut out along the wall$400 to $800
Vaulted ceilingDamaged drywall overhead$400 to $1,000
RetexturingPer square foot$1 to $3
Painting one roomA professional painter$990 to $1,320

Small hairline cracks start at $60 in that guide. Extensive cracks reach $330, once wood supports and a new section of board go in.

Ceilings are harder to patch than walls, because the work is overhead. Larger ceiling holes likely cost $115 or more for each section, the guide says. Our ceiling repair page covers that side of the work.

How do per square foot, hourly and minimum charges work?

Some pros price drywall repair by the square foot of damage. One national guide puts that at $60 to $80 per square foot. At that rate, a 2 square foot patch runs $120 to $160. A 10 square foot repair runs $600 to $800, and 20 square feet runs $1,200 to $1,600.

Others charge by the hour. The same guide puts most drywall repair at $70 to $80 an hour. Complex work, such as water damage, can reach $100 an hour.

Small jobs carry a minimum of one hour in most cases, the guide says. It also says the square foot charge can seem artificially high on jobs across several rooms. For those, the hourly rate is often the better gauge.

A minimum charge is one reason to group repairs into one visit. Several patches can share that first hour. Our post on handyman costs in St. Petersburg covers how hourly and minimum charges add up.

What do texture matching and paint add to the cost?

A patch is done when it disappears under paint. Knockdown, orange peel and smooth walls each patch a little differently. A flat patch on a textured wall still shows once the paint dries.

One national cost guide puts retexturing drywall at $1 to $3 a square foot. We test the mix on a scrap piece first. Then the texture carries past the edge of the patch so it blends.

Paint is the last line. The same guide puts painting a single room at $990 to $1,320 when a professional does it. Fresh paint over a patch can stand out against older paint, so a whole wall or room often gets painted. Our interior painting page covers that part.

What does water damaged drywall cost after a storm?

Water damage is where drywall repair costs climb. One national guide puts water damaged walls or ceilings at $400 to $800 for a single room. A flood cut lands in the same range.

The leak gets fixed first, and the wall has to be dry. Drying and leak work sit outside what we do. Our part is the board itself: cut out, new sheet, tape, finish and texture.

St. Petersburg has a city page on storm damage from Hurricanes Helene and Milton. It says removing storm-damaged drywall does not require a permit. A building permit is required before that drywall is repaired or replaced. The city says unpermitted storm repairs result in a violation.

Under the city’s floodplain rules, damage reaching 49 percent of a home’s pre-damage market value is substantial damage. Those are city rules, so confirm with the city for your home. We walk through that when we look at the job.

Does an older St. Petersburg home change the price?

Census figures show the median home in St. Petersburg was built in 1969. About 7 in 10 homes in the city went up before 1980. More homes were built in the 1950s than in any other decade.

Older walls carry decades of old patches and joint compound. The Consumer Product Safety Commission says patching compounds and textured paint may contain asbestos. Their use was banned in 1977, and sanding, scraping or drilling those surfaces may release asbestos.

So a patch in an older home can start with a sample. The agency says a professional should take samples for analysis, and a laboratory reads them. Florida regulates asbestos surveys and removal as a separate trade under Chapter 469 of its statutes. That testing is never our work.

Block homes can add a step too. Some have the wall board fastened to wood strips on the block, so a patch needs backing set behind it. A textured popcorn ceiling is its own job, covered under popcorn ceiling removal.

Do you need a permit to repair drywall in St. Petersburg?

The city’s List of Exempted Permits covers interior wall or ceiling finish repair of a casual, minor or inconsequential nature. The exemption holds while the total repair area stays at or under 100 square feet. The exemption stops where the work affects a load bearing wall’s structure or a fire rated separation.

Homes in a designated flood zone still submit a cost breakdown for work that may be exempt. Homes in a historic district may not be exempt at all. This is general education from the city’s list, not legal advice, so confirm with the city for your job.

Should you patch drywall yourself or hire it out?

One national cost guide says small nail holes and some hairline cracks can be repaired DIY. It says larger repairs should be left to professionals to help prevent further damage.

Texture is where a DIY patch tends to show. In an older home, hold off on sanding old patches until a sample has been tested. If the hole is one item on a longer list, one visit can cover the whole list.

How do you get a price for your own drywall repair?

The ranges above are market numbers from published guides. Your number moves with the number of spots and their size. Whether they sit on a wall or a ceiling matters too. Texture and paint add to it.
