How Much Does Door Installation Cost in St. Petersburg, FL?

National cost guides put an interior slab door at about $120 to $400 to install. A prehung interior door comes mounted in its own frame. It runs about $170 to $470, including the door, hardware and labor.

An exterior door costs about $400 to $1,700 to install in the same guides. A single front door runs $500 to $1,900 installed. A back or side door runs $300 to $1,000.

These are national market numbers, not our price list. Our door installation page covers the door work we do in St. Petersburg and across Pinellas County.

What does each type of door cost to install?

The table pulls installed ranges from national cost guides. Each row is one door unless it says otherwise.

Door jobNational installed rangeWhat the range covers
Interior slab door$120 to $400Depends on whether a frame is in place and hardware holes are needed
Interior prehung door$170 to $470The door in its frame, plus hardware and labor
Closet or bifold door$120 to $380 for a closet door, $180 to $350 for a bifoldA complete installation
French doors, interior$400 to $1,600A pair of doors, prehung or slab
Exterior entry door$500 to $1,900A single front door
Back or side door$300 to $1,000A single back or side door

Guides do not agree to the dollar. The same publisher’s front door replacement guide puts a basic single door at $500 to $2,500 or more. That range is for a door the same size as the old one. Treat each range as a rough guide.

How much does interior door installation cost?

One national guide puts the full cost to replace an interior door at $226 to $824. That covers materials and labor. Most homeowners spend $100 to $500 on the door and $120 to $300 on labor.

A standard prehung door shows the split. The guide lists $50 to $300 for the door and $120 to $170 for labor. Disposal of the old door can add $40 to $80.

Closet doors sit near the low end. A closet door runs $120 to $380 installed, and a bifold door runs $180 to $350. Interior french doors usually come in pairs, and a pair runs $400 to $1,600 to install.

How much does exterior door installation cost?

National guides put exterior door installation at $400 to $1,700. A single front door runs $500 to $1,900 installed. For a basic single door, labor alone averages $300 to $500 when the frame needs no repairs.

A prehung exterior door costs $440 to $1,800 installed, and a slab costs $400 to $1,700. The guide says a prehung door costs more to buy. The labor costs less, because it goes in faster.

Back doors cost less than front doors. A new back door runs $300 to $1,000, and the door alone costs $150 to $300. Most are basic doors without windows or sidelights. A basic wood or steel back door runs $280 to $580 installed.

A french door used as a back door costs more. The guide puts it at $450 to $740 in wood and $540 to $970 in steel, installed. On a front door, sidelights add $500 to $1,500 or more per side.

What drives the price of a new door?

National guides break a door job into a few cost lines.

Slab or prehung

A slab is the door by itself, without a frame, hinges or hardware. A prehung door comes mounted on its frame. One guide says slab doors typically cost half as much as prehung doors, but installation costs more. A new slab that needs holes drilled for hardware adds $95 to $150 to the install.

Older homes and odd-size openings

St. Petersburg’s median home was built in 1969, according to the Census. More homes here were built in the 1950s than in any other decade, 32,033 of them. In homes that age, a door opening may be out of square or an odd size.

That changes the price. If the new door matches the frame, trimming and fitting runs $30 to $70. One guide notes that usually only flush solid-core doors can be trimmed. Resizing the opening runs $250 to $400, and reframing it runs $110 to $220.

Exterior frames add their own costs. Frame repair can add $75 to $200 or more. Rebuilding the opening runs $7 to $20 per linear foot of framing.

Trim and casing

Casing is the trim nailed around a door on the wall. One guide puts new casing at $90 to $155 per door, or $2 to $4 per linear foot. We handle trim and casing as part of our finish carpentry work.

Hardware

Replacing interior door hardware runs $60 to $200, and installing a lock runs $40 to $330. On an entry door, a handle or knob and lock set costs $50 to $300 before labor. A deadbolt costs $15 to $45. Even a prehung door usually still needs its handle and lock.

Paint

Many new doors come unfinished. One guide puts painting an interior door at $75 to $150. Painting a front door runs $125 to $225, or $150 to $400 with its trim. Our interior painting work covers doors and trim.

Do you need a permit to replace a door in St. Petersburg?

The City of St. Petersburg keeps a list of work that is exempt from a building permit. It names cabinetry, counter tops, painting, tiling and other similar finish work. Door replacement is not named on that list.

So check with the city’s building department before you replace an exterior door. Ask about any other door job you are unsure of, too. Outside St. Petersburg, ask your own city or the county.

Flood zones add a step. The city’s list says flood-zone projects must submit a cost breakdown, even for work that may be exempt. This is general information, not legal advice, and the city has the final word.

Should you repair or replace a door?

A repair can cost less. One guide puts interior door repair at $75 to $220. Many door problems start with a damaged frame or a poor install. The door then sticks or sags on its hinges.

For standard bedroom, bathroom and closet doors, the guide leans toward replacement, since the price can be similar. For costly french doors or doors with glass, it suggests trying a repair first. If you replace, reusing the old hinges and handles can save money.

For an entry door, the front door guide lists signs it is time. The door is hard to open and close, drafty or letting in light. It shows weather damage, or it is 15 years old or more. A new door the exact same size can go into a frame that is still in good condition.

How do you get a price for your door job?

The ranges above are national market numbers. Your price depends on the door, the opening, the trim and the hardware.

Flow Home Services hangs interior doors, closet and pantry doors, and exterior and back doors. We also replace door hardware, trim and casing. One of our Google reviews is for a new back door.
