A tiled walk in shower where the old tub was

A shower remodel fixes the part of the bathroom you stand in every morning. We build tile showers in St. Petersburg homes and condos. That covers walk in showers, tub to shower conversions, shower floors, niches and glass. The work starts with a waterproofing membrane on the floor and walls, before any tile is set.

Most shower work happens inside the room you already have. If the vanity, the floor and the paint need help too, that is a full bathroom remodel. Send a few photos of the shower and we will tell you what we see. Estimates are free, and you can call or text (727) 404-7164.

What We Handle

Tub to shower conversions and bathtub replacement

Plenty of St. Petersburg bathrooms still have the tub that came with the house. Nobody in the house uses it, and stepping over the side gets harder every year. A tub to shower conversion turns that alcove into a walk in shower. The old tub and its tile surround come out first, and the wall usually stays put.

If you would rather keep a tub, we tile the walls around it instead. Bathtub replacement means new tile either way, because the old surround rarely comes off in one piece. The niche and the trim get built the same way.

Our part of the job is the tile, the waterproofing, the niche, the glass and the trim. We talk through the rest when we come look at the bathroom. If the floor outside the shower is coming up too, new floor tile can go down while we are there.

What a walk in shower installation looks like

A walk in shower installation is built in layers. The walls get backer board, then a waterproofing membrane, then the tile. The shower floor gets an uncoupling and waterproofing membrane before any tile goes down. Skipping that layer is how water gets behind a wall and shows up in the next room.

One of our own showers shows the finish work well. The walls and the ceiling are large format marble look porcelain. There is a built in niche, a window inside the shower, and small white tile on the shower floor. We set a laser line before the first piece goes up, so the joints run straight.

Large format tile means fewer grout lines, so there is less to scrub later. Small tile on the floor does the opposite job, since the extra grout lines give your feet grip. Shower tile installation finishes with grout, clean caulk in the corners, glass and trim.

Shower remodels in older St. Petersburg homes and condos

The middle of St. Petersburg is full of concrete block ranch homes built from the 1950s to the 1970s. Their bathrooms are small, the tub sits in a standard alcove, and the tile is original. The 1920s bungalows in Historic Kenwood and the Old Northeast have the same problem in a smaller room.

Condo bathrooms downtown and out on the beach are smaller still, and many have no window. Once the tub alcove is tiled as a walk in shower, the room reads bigger without touching the layout. We keep our part inside the unit: the tile, the waterproofing, the niche and the finish work.

Homes near the water are still being put back together after the 2024 storms. Hurricane Helene pushed surge into low lying areas like Shore Acres and Riviera Bay, and Hurricane Milton followed in October. A bathroom gutted to the studs is open to the framing, which is the best time to build a shower. We drive out from St. Petersburg to the Pinellas County towns around it for this work too.

FAQ

Shower Remodeling Questions, Answered

Common questions about shower remodeling across St. Petersburg and Pinellas County. If yours is not here, call or text and ask.

Call (727) 404-7164

What does a shower remodel cost?
The size of the shower drives it first, then the tile you pick. A niche, a bench or a glass panel each add work. How much has to come out matters too, since a shower stripped to the studs is a bigger job. Estimates are free, so send photos or call or text (727) 404-7164.
Can you turn my bathtub into a walk in shower?
Yes, that is a tub to shower conversion. The tub alcove usually gives us the room we need, so the wall stays put. The old tub and surround come out, and new waterproofing goes on. Then the space gets tiled as a walk in shower.
How long does a shower remodel take?
It runs in stages, and some of them have to dry before the next one starts. Tear out, waterproofing, tile, grout and glass each take their own time. A retile and a full rebuild do not run the same way. We give you the schedule once we have looked at your shower.
What if I want to keep the tub?
Then we tile the walls around it. A tub surround tiled to the ceiling changes the look of a small bathroom. Add a niche for bottles and clean trim at the edges. We go through the rest of the job with you when we come look at it.
Will a walk in shower fit in a small bathroom?
Usually it will. We work inside the footprint you already have. A shower built in the old tub alcove makes the room feel bigger. If the vanity, the floor and the paint are tired too, look at remodeling the whole bathroom.
Do you build showers in condos?
Yes, we work in downtown St. Petersburg condos and in the beach towns. Those bathrooms are usually the smallest ones we see. Our part stays inside the unit: the tile, the waterproofing, the niche and the finish work. If other repairs are on your list, our handyman services can pick them up on the same visit.
